2004 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize
A portrait painting entitled “Aunty Syd and her One Hundred Years” by Josonia Palaitis, is currently on exhibition in the 2004 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize at the State Library of NSW. 30 finalists were chosen out of 518 entries for the competition.
Jo Palaitis, a former winner of the $100,000 prize, has painted a sensitive and engaging portrait of her dearly loved great-aunt, Sydney May Clegg, who was born in 1904 in South Africa. The already large family had moved there after their father had served in the Boer War. In 1905 the family returned to Australia. Syd Clegg has two sons, four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
“Aunty Syd has been in my life all my life,” said the artist. “Her exuberant laughter and fun-loving spirit always filled the air with optimism whenever she came to visit.”
